Leaders of Nam Can Tho University honored individuals who were admitted to the US Medicine Residency Program in 2024

The event serves as a source of inspiration for Vietnamese doctors and students who aspire to pursue specialized training in the United States. It also provides a valuable opportunity for medical students, particularly those from Nam Can Tho University, to network, exchange ideas, and gain motivation for their future studies and career paths. This program also aims to showcase the university to a global audience, foster collaboration between US resident doctors and Nam Can Tho University and its affiliated hospital, and establish partnerships with international organizations for future activities at the Faculty of Medicine and Nam Can Tho University Hospital.

Dr. Nguyen Van Quang, Rector of the DNC, addressed at the ceremony

At the ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Van Quang, Rector of Nam Can Tho University, emphasized that becoming a resident doctor is a common aspiration among medical students in Vietnam. He also highlighted the value of this program for those seeking to advance their studies and careers in the medical field. The residency training program is highly regarded and typically lasts 2-4 years. Upon completing their 6-year university training, medical students have the option to pursue higher education by taking the entrance exam for a residency program. However, there are certain eligibility requirements, such as being under 27 years old, having a clean disciplinary record, and having been a full-time medical student. It is worth noting that each student can only take the medical residency exam once in their lifetime, highlighting the difficulty and significance of this exam.

The US Medicine Residency Program is considered the gateway to fulfilling the aspirations and ambitions of medical students and doctors, not only in Vietnam but also for students and doctors from other countries. However, for Vietnamese doctors, becoming a US Resident Doctor is a difficult and demanding process that requires passing an entry exam and completing a training program lasting anywhere from 3 to 7 years, depending on the chosen specialty. Pursuing this path can be challenging and rigorous journey.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Quang, several challenges need to be addressed. For many years, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phillip Tran has been dedicated to guiding and supporting young Vietnamese doctors in their studies in the international medical field. His goal is to make a positive impact on the development of the country’s medical industry. As a result of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phillip Tran’s guidance, a high percentage of Vietnamese doctors have successfully passed their exams (with a pass rate of 80% – 90% over the years).

At the ceremony, Nam Can Tho University also expressed gratitude for the silent contributions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phillip Tran.
