Nam Can Tho University holds the opening ceremony for the first cohort of the International Medical Program in 2024

DNC – On November 19, 2024, Nam Can Tho University (DNC) solemnly held the Opening Ceremony for the First Cohort of the 2024 International Medical Program. This training program is conducted by the agreement DNC signed with VMED Education Organization from India.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Mahesh Chand Giri – Acting Consul General of the Indian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, and Mr. Srinesh Vallabhaneni – Director of VMED Organization (India). From Can Tho, the event was graced by members of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, the Executive Committee of the City Party, representatives from various departments, districts, and local authorities, along with leaders from the Department of Education and Training and several universities in the Mekong Delta region.

The first cohort consists of 44 students from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Middle Eastern countries, and other nations. These students have successfully passed the rigorous entrance requirements of the DNC International Medical Faculty, which included an entrance exam, academic transcript review, and an interview conducted by the Medical Advisory Board of the University of Can Tho Hospital. During the interview, the Advisory Board emphasized not only academic knowledge but also compassion and the sense of empathy and community service of the applicants. The admission process also required proficiency in English and good health conditions. The International Medical Faculty aims to enhance the university’s teaching innovation and expand international cooperation, especially in the healthcare sector. In addition to training international students, DNC students with strong English proficiency are encouraged to participate in this program.

This is also the solid foundation that will help them strive for success in their studies and training in the coming years.

At the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phillip Tran stated: “The International Medical Program and the medical degree of DNC are internationally recognized. The program is taught in English, combining practical content with a clinical focus, enabling students to integrate internationally while still in school. Students are imparted knowledge and encouraged to be creative, develop critical thinking, enhance their professional skills, and gain confidence when facing challenges in medicine. They will learn and practice in DNC’s state-of-the-art laboratories under the guidance of leading professors from both domestic and international institutions, and undertake internships at major hospitals in Vietnam and the United States. DNC’s International Medical Faculty also offers a USMLE preparation program, expanding opportunities for students to participate in residency programs in the United States.

Associate Professor Dr. Phillip Tran, Chairman of the DNC International Medical Faculty Academic Council, stressed the importance of training future doctors using modern methodologies from developed countries, integrating practical medical experience with robust research capabilities. The state-of-the-art facilities will ensure that students from various countries and Vietnam receive high-quality, internationally recognized education from the onset of their undergraduate studies.

Mr. Mahesh Chand Giri shared: “After researching all areas of DNC’s activities, I assess the university as one of the leading institutions in medical education. I trust that the students fortunate enough to study here will become highly skilled and compassionate doctors in the future… As the Acting Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to continuing to bring Indian students to study at DNC, I will also assist Vietnamese students, particularly those from DNC, in pursuing studies in India, should they have such aspirations.”

The university has continuously strengthened its international partnerships with prestigious universities and research institutes in countries such as the United States, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, the Philippines, and India, through both bilateral and multilateral collaborations in various fields. To date, Nam Can Tho University has enrolled and trained five cohorts in Business Administration in collaboration with the Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST). At the same time, the university has officially signed a cooperation agreement with VMED Organization (India) to welcome international students for training.

On this occasion, Nam Can Tho University awarded scholarships to five international medical students, with prizes such as: Excellence in Academics, Humanitarian Award, Future Healthcare Leader Award, and Young Researcher Award, each worth 2,000,000 VND. In particular, the Overcoming Difficulties Award was presented to a student from a challenging background who achieved excellent academic results and demonstrated determination in pursuing a career in medicine, valued at 2,250 USD.

After the opening ceremony, the university proceeded to introduce and familiarize the new students with the regulations at DNC. Additionally, the university continued to offer support, provide moral encouragement, and organize cultural exchange activities with the new International Medical students.
